Collecting, Reporting, and Using Individual-Level Data on Teacher Salaries, Benefits, and Retirement: Practices in Three States

Primary Researchers: Reino Makkonen, Melissa Eiler White

California Department of Education (CDE) staff planning the California Longitudinal Teacher Information Data Education System (CALTIDES) sought technical assistance to inform discussions about the possibility of incorporating retirement and salary data into the CALTIDES database, which is set to be rolled out in the 2011/12 school year. CDE officials requested information about specific salary- and retirement-related data elements that might be incorporated into CALTIDES to help state education leaders answer key policy questions.

This technical assistance from REL West involved reviewing existing documentation and interviewing key officials in relevant organizations and 3–5 states that currently incorporate such longitudinal teacher data, ultimately resulting in a policy memorandum completed in the early part of 2011 in order to inform the state’s spring legislative session.
