Changes in Reading and Mathematics Proficiency Levels Over Elementary and Middle School Grades for Students in Washoe County (NV) School District

Primary Researchers: Andrea Lash, Min Huang, Loan Tran

Washoe County School District (WCSD) wants to improve its students’ preparation for high school graduation. Through previous technical assistance from REL West, WCSD learned that its students’ proficiency on the grade 8 state-administered achievement tests was related to students’ likelihood of graduating from high school. After seeing those results, district administrators wanted to understand how well WCSD schools were preparing their students to meet the grade 8 standards. They asked REL West to assist in examining their longitudinal administrative data to learn whether students’ proficiency levels in reading and mathematics increase over late elementary and middle school years.
